By Andrea L. Boone – Three years in the planning and warnings via every media outlet in the state, the Great American Shake out or the earthquake simulation took place on Aril 17, 2012. There were thousands of players all over the state of Utah. I got to play with the fire guys at Station 111 in Magna.
We initialed a table top exercise from the Magna station. The phone call came in at 0800 hours informing us an earthquake of 7.5 magnitude had struck the Salt Lake Valley Infrastructure was impacted, freeways out of commission, the valley was a mess.
The staff off fire guys made an initial evaluation, and assessed the targets area. They took a tour of the Magna area, radio check with all entities playing with this exercise.. Fire fighter personal playing was Captain Barker, Engineer Jones, Fire fighter Davis, Paramedic Wimmer and Paramedics Webb.
After the initial roll call and the response to a special lockdown channel, it was business as usual.
There were a couple of medical calls while I was hanging out there. The guys are so professional and know exactly what they are doing. They make very good coffee and a great stir fry. Magna should be very proud of these fine young men and so should the Unified Fire Department.
